Mucha & the Slav Epic – Mythical past to visionary future.

Many of us are familiar with Alfonse Mucha as an outstanding figure of fin-de-siècle Paris, the poster designer who made actress Sarah Bernhardt immortal, and who turned advertising into an art form. Less well known is the work to which Mucha devoted more than twenty years of his life, and which he regarded as his most greatest accomplishment. The Slav Epic, a series of 20 enormous canvases was first shown in 1928 and presented a visual history of the Slavs from their mythical past to their visionary future. Mucha conceived his work as a gift to Prague and the Czech people: \”I wanted\”, he said, \”to talk in my own way to the soul of the nation\”.

Kathy McLauchlan is a course director at the Victoria & Albert Museum, organising courses and study days on the history of art and design. She teaches at several institutions, including the Arts Society and Art Pursuits. A graduate of Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute, she has published catalogues and articles for the British Council and the Barbican Art Gallery.
