This lecture will offer an understanding of van Gogh leading up to his crucial 1880 decision about the direction of his life\, and we will learn about a journey which led to the culmination of his final weeks at Auvers-sur-Oise\, France. \nPeter McPhee was appointed to a Personal Chair in History at the University of Melbourne in 1993.  He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University from 2003 to 2009.
